Operations Management in the Software Development Industry In this paper I will focus on the software development industry and the interaction between the field of operations management and the software development industry. I will start by giving an overview of the software development industry and how it differs from a typical manufacturing industry. Then, I will identify the main management issues that managers in the software development industry encounter. I will end the paper by explaining how operations management is applied in the software development industry and what the operations management issues are in the software development industry and how to solve them. The Software development industry includes businesses that practice computer programming, documenting, testing, and bug fixing to create and maintain applications. For an application to be developed, it passes through a lifecycle. An application lifecycle is a division of software development work into distinct phases containing activities. The main activities of a typical application lifecycle are getting the requirements, analysis of requirements, designing the software, writing the code, testing the functions of the application, and finally the acceptance of the software by the customer (see figure 1).
